The FGBF supports the mission of Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church and its broad community role in cultural programming, civic life, and social justice. Its focus is on fundraising for the repair and renovation of the LAPC facility in Fort Greene Brooklyn and for the development of programs in these areas.

LAPC has been a social and cultural hub of the Fort Greene neighborhood for more than 160 years. Currently, the church serves approx.15,000 people as home to 4 nonprofits and is continually used by the public as the “Town Hall'' of Fort Greene. However, the historic church building is in urgent need of repairs and maintenance. FGBF coordinates this architectural restoration effort so that LAPC can continue to serve its essential functions in the neighborhood. FGBF also exists to coordinate the arts, cultural and social justice activities which rely on the building. 

 LAPC is home to the Irondale Theater Center, a repertory company focused on social justice issues; the Business Outreach Center providing loans, counseling, and trainings to MWBE businesses; Fort Greene Park Conservancy coordinating volunteer activities in the Olmstead designed park, and The Audre Lorde Project, a safe space for organizing the LGBTQIA+ community. The Lecture Hall where Horace Greeley, Booker T. Washington, and Samuel Clemens among others spoke is now used for services, workshops, and training. The sanctuary where Quaker Sarah Smiley once preached is now used by Women’s Press Collective for its annual Women’s Day Celebration. Numerous musical and theatrical performances are held in the sanctuary with its beautiful acoustics including 3 choirs and Jazz Vespers Services.

The sanctuary of LAPC has been closed since fall 2023, when a large piece of plaster fell from the ceiling. The historic church also has a number of other deferred maintenance and restoration issues. The near-term goal of FGBF is to coordinate the fundraising and construction efforts to address these issues, while building a base for cultural, arts and social justice programming.
